The Hitchhiker's Guide To Romance

I’m hitchhiking through Georgetown, Indiana, when a stranger on a motorcycle pulls over and offers me a ride. We rumble past familiar landmarks—McDonald’s, Circle K, Gas n’ Stuff—kicking up dust as the engine hums beneath us. Without warning, he slams on the brakes, jolting me forward. We skid to a stop beside a food cart manned by an unexpected figure: my high school history teacher. The scent of sizzling burgers, hot dogs, and sausages wafts through the air as he flips patties with the same authority he once wielded over lectures. Moments later, a second vendor rolls up, setting up a neighboring cart stocked with chilled drinks, their condensation glinting in the sunlight.
The motorcyclist doesn’t linger. He revs the engine and swings us back toward where we started, weaving through the streets until we reach a modest house. He drops me off without a word, and I step inside to find my tutor waiting. She’s already sprawled across her bed, a laptop propped up with a video queued—something about physics or chemistry, one of those sciences that blur together in my mind. I join her, sinking into the mattress as the lecture drones on. My attention drifts. The equations and diagrams fade into background noise, and I glance at her. Her eyes remain fixed on the screen, unwavering, absorbed.
Restless, I shift closer and let my hand brush her leg. My fingers trace a soft, tentative path along her skin. She stiffens slightly, then turns to meet my gaze. Eye contact has always been a struggle for me—a quiet battle of wills against my own instincts—but I fight to hold it now. Her stare is steady, searching. My pulse quickens as my brain screams to look away, but I don’t. She reaches for the remote, her voice cutting through the tension. “Yeah, we’re done with this.” With a click, the screen goes dark, and the room falls silent.

Death and Decay

Everyone is dying. My family. Friends. It has something to do with sex. The sickness is spread through sex. Similar to "IT FOLLOWS." My mom doesn't want me to see her die, so she hugs me and leaves. She dies alone in a hotel room. I watch as the people in my house slowly go the way of the reaper. The sickness hasn't found me. And it never will. I decide that it's time to leave. It's hard to choose what to bring with me. I have so many books. I can't bring them all. I look and see books written by J. R. R Tolkien sitting on my dresser. In the end, I travel light.

I know of a group of people living near Terre Haute, Indiana. I think I'll go there. The men there are builders. They use Minecraft blocks to build their structures and vehicles. I grab an antenna and a walkie talkie in case someone is alive out there and sending out a signal. I drive away from death and decay. Dream ends.

I wake up.

My Cup Runneth Over

Dream 1.23.2019

I walk through the halls of my old church in Anderson, Indiana. The church is small, but it feels like home to me. I walk through twisted hallways to a different part of the church, an area in which I've never been. At the end of the long hall, I find another church. This one is much bigger, and the seats are filled with those who believe and those who don't.

I walk up to an upper balcony that is more of a dining area where one can still experience the service, but rather in a more casual manner. I meet two of my friends. One person is called Jordan, and the other has no name. They ask me to bring them a drink. Jordan wants a drink called Runescape. And the man with no name wants four Mountain Dews. I go and retrieve for them the beverages. Dream ends.

Four Dead In Indiana

Dream 9.22.2018

I stand by my car as four strangers walk by. They ask for jumper cables. They open my car door without permission. One man walks up to my house, opens the door, and walks inside. I'm uncomfortable. A confrontation takes place. The boys become angry and push me around. We take it out to the street. My buddy, Bugs, is next door working in his yard. He pulls out a rifle, and one by one shoots each man dead. Four bodies lie in the yard and street. At first, I am satisfied, but then I am scared.

I burn the bodies and stuff the bones inside grocery bags. I carry them with me looking for a place to hide. I meet with some friends. I don't tell them what I'm transporting. They take the bag thinking it is something else and the bones spill out. They are disgusted. I try to think of a cover story, but nothing comes to mind. Dream ends.

Wigwam

Dream 4/25/2018

I am trying to get home to Anderson, Indiana. I am a few towns away, but I am lost and can't find my way. I drive through a city in which I don't know the name. I drive aimlessly.

Somehow, I find the old Anderson high school gymnasium, the Wigwam. I park the Jeep and walk inside. There is a sports tournament being held. I get excited for a moment and hope to cheer on my school, Liberty when I realize that I've been out of school for ten years. I wouldn't even know any of the players. A bit saddened, I leave. Dream ends.

Small Town

Dream 3/29/2018

I've moved back to my childhood town of Markleville, Indiana. It's grown a lot since I've moved away. My dad has given me his white Ford F-150. I'm driving it back to my new house. I drive up and down the main road through town looking for my home but cannot find it.

I drive back through town. At a four-way stop, there is a flagger. Some construction is taking place. It is hard to see what the flagger is commanding. He yells at me to go. I become stressed and speed through the intersection. I pull over in a parking lot, then I turn around.

When pulling out, I notice a car that looks stalled on the road. There is a car behind it full of girls. They become so angry at the stalled car that they ram it, causing the stalled car to almost hit me. They then speed off. I get so mad at this that I take off in their direction. I push the pedal to the metal and drive right up on their tail. They notice me. They become scared. For a moment, I consider ramming them off the road, but then I remember the nice truck I am driving. They almost fly off the road in fear, but I slow down and head back towards town.

I park the truck hoping that the girls don't find it and trash it. I walk up the main road in town looking at the different shops and restaurants. I see a Dairy Barn, probably sells ice cream. I pass a little shed called Jack's Candy. There are pictures on the outside wall depicting the types of treats sold there. One item looks like a Rice Krispy Treat with M&M's and nuts in it. Next to the candy shop is a Tuna Melt Sandwich shop. That is where I intend on eating. I walk towards it. Dream ends.

Weenie Roast

A Dream From The Past

My father's company is holding a barbecue at our house in Middletown, Indiana. Everyone is having a splendid time. I walk through the party looking for my dad and sister, Kristen. I am unable to locate them. I do some digging and find out that my dad and sister fell into the meat grinder and were killed. Sadness gives me a lovely punch square in the face. I look around. Those attending the party are still having fun. This is a paradox of emotion.

Four beautiful girls and I pack into a car and drive to the mall. We cruise through a parking garage. We drive through the central part of town.

Across the road from where I live is usually a cornfield. Today, it is an ocean. The party-goers gather at the beach. Many of us run up a nearby dock. There is a whale in the water. Some of those at the party wants to kill the whale. I want to save it. I get in the water to rescue the animal. I see my dad and sister on the shore. Dream ends.

Shark Excursion

A Dream From The Past

I'm roaming around Anderson, Indiana with some friends looking for something to do. If I had to guess, I would say it was the 1970's. There is a lot of fun stuff to do here, not like how I remember. The whole city is like one giant amusement park.

Near Applewood, there is a shark ride similar to the JAWS ride at Universal Studios, Orlando. This ride however is much more intense. We are placed in a bus that submerges underwater. The windows are nice and big so we can see everything. Swimming next to the bus is a Great White shark. The size of the beast is enough to take the air from your lungs. We have several more encounters along the way. At one point, I tell the bus driver that the graphics on a nearby television are old. He agrees. He then makes me an honorary co-captain of the bus. He places a button on my shirt to make it official.

The bus comes to a stop next to another bus. The driver says, "if you want to experience the scarier portion of the ride, you can exit this bus and enter the other. If you want the experience to end, stay where you are." I board the other bus. I want fear. I need adrenaline. I sit at the back of the bus near the emergency exit. The bus submerges deeper underwater this time. I look out the back door and there is a giant shark with his mouth stretched wide open, looking for a quick lunch. Dream ends.

Leather

Dream 1.8.2017

I've bought a tiny, black hamster and brought it home to meet the family. I forgot to purchase a cage at the pet store, so I just let the little fur ball run around my room. I soon find this to be a mistake because it's hard to keep track of him. Also my cats seem a bit too interested. I decide to make a trip to the pet store to buy a cage.

Driving down a country road in Middletown, Indiana, I look out my car window and see a pick up football game taking place. I pull over and walk over to watch. It's my dad's company, but just the upper management. The ball flies over my direction. I pick it up and throw it back to one of the players. One of the team members throws a fit that I touched the ball and I am a nobody. Only upper management can touch the ball. I later hear through the grapevine that my dad, who is very high in the company, far higher than the weasel who threw a tantrum on the field, went off on the weasel for his fit and treating me with such disrespect.

Not far from the pickup football game is a house. In this house resides Leatherface, the chainsaw wielding mad man from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Several times I walk into his yard and every time he runs out of his house to chase me. One time, I notice him through an upstairs window. I try to climb the side of the house to spy but he catches me. Eventually, I recognize this as a bad situation and scram, but he notices my scramming and chases me anyway. Dream ends.

Hollywood, Indiana

Dream 12.6.2017

A superhero movie is being filmed at my childhood home in Middletown, Indiana. I try to mingle with the actors as much as I can. They are famous!

The movie takes place in the 1940's or 1950's. The superheroes are not from either the Marvel or DC universes. Their suits are colorful. One man has a machine on his shoulder that comes over to cover one of his eyes. I believe the machine shoots lasers.

In one scene of the movie, the superheroes have to go into an office with water covering it. They then have to go underwater where they would find a gate. They shoot the gate with a laser and burn a hole into it. They swim through the hole and find themselves in a secret room.

Another scene shows one of the heroes turning on his team. They kill him in self defense but then stick him in an electric chair to burn his remains.

I watch from the french doors at the back of my house as they film in my backyard. I would love to go out and watch but I am not welcomed. Later on, when they are finished filming in a certain area, I walk out and look at the set designs. There is a ramp used for an intense car chase scene. There is a tall table with a chess set on it. I wonder what that was used for in the movie. When looking at the chess set, a strong wind blows through my yard and some of the set falls over.

The last scene of the movie shows the villain capturing one of the superheroes' kids along with the superhero parents. The villain forces the kid to hold a grenade, turn her back to her parents and throw the grenade over her shoulder (much like a bride would throw the bouquet at her wedding). The grenade flies through the roof and clears the parents. They are unharmed. Dream ends.

Camp Stupid

Dream 11.18.17

I'm living at my old house in Middletown, Indiana. My family and I grow many animals. These animals are not earthly. For example, there is one that has the shape of a tadpole but is big and hairy like a groundhog. He hides in a bush. I try to get him out but am unsuccessful. Later, I find him dead in a fish tank. I put on a pair of rubber gloves and fish him out.

We hear a noise in the cornfield across the street. My sister, Morgan, runs toward the field. This scares me because who knows what is out there making that noise. She disappears in the corn. I hear other voices. I walk inside the crop and find a few strangers. One of them may or may not be a witch.

A youth camp is being held at my house. My dad is one of the leaders. We are being divided into two teams - red and blue - for sports and activities. The red team gets first pick. The leaders of the camp, including my dad, pick the three most athletic kids in camp to be on the red team. Then, they only pick one person for the blue team and then return to red. By the time the teams are chosen, one can see a huge difference in the two. The red team is by far the superior force. The blue team is filled with weaklings and nerds. I am on the blue team. The red team members are wearing red colored raggedy Ann wigs.

I am not usually someone who speaks out for the cause of fairness. I think "survival of the fittest" is fair enough, but this is just ridiculous. I stand up and confront the leaders in front of everyone. I slowly walk toward them as I ridicule their bias decision of picking teams. I walk over a bridge. There is a bridge in my house. By the time, I am done speaking, I am standing right in front of them. My dad pulls me aside to talk.

The teams are disbanded. They are then reassembled in a more honest manner. While this is being done, I go and stand by myself with my arms crossed. I can tell that the former red team members are angry with me. They had a winning team and I threw a wrench in their plans. In my mind I think that they probably don't like me but they at least respect me for standing up to injustice. I find out that I am still on the blue team, which is fine, since they are more even now. A few individuals on the teams have different colored bands on their sleeve. One boy with a band is told that he will be the medic for the blue team. He starts hyperventilating, saying that he himself has medical issues and cannot accept the duties of the medic. I find that I have four different colored bands on each of my arms. They tell me that I am the foreigner of the team. I have no idea what that means.

There is a boy at this camp. He is pale and bald. He looks like Jason Voorhees as a child or a war boy from Mad Max: Fury Road. Something is odd about this boy. I don't think he is human. It may be a little redundant at this point, but this is just the way my mind works, I think he is a demon. His face reminds me of Chucky from Child's Play. He gives everyone trouble. My dad tells me to watch the boy while he goes somewhere. Somehow, I shrink the boy. He is now 1 inch tall. I keep him in a small dollhouse that I hold in my hands. With his demonic abilities, he continually morphs the dollhouse to give me trouble. I keep my fingers away from the windows for fear that he will stab me.

My dad returns. He needs to give the boy a bath. Someone later tells me that the boy looks like a crocodile lying in the tub. I can see into the future. I find that my dad will build onto this house, a small bedroom and invite this boy to live with us. The boy will then become a serial killer. I tell my dad this. It doesn't seem to phase him. After the boy gets out of the tub and dries off, I notice that he is taller and has hair. He is now an old friend of mine from middle school named Kirk. He puts his hand out and I shake it. Dream ends.

From Ashes To Ashes

Dream 10/22/2017

I am in downtown Indianapolis near a swimming pool. Without warning, the Salesforce tower, the tallest building in the city, collapses and falls to rubble. Many people are dead. As I look around, I see hundreds of piles of rubble that used to be buildings.

I catch a ride with some friends. We drive through the city. As we go, a giant wave of water chases us. We almost get stuck but eventually make it out.

When we leave the city, I notice that buildings have fallen everywhere. Even in small towns. What is happening? My mom texts me, Keith, are you ok?. I text her back. We head for home. I hope it's still standing. Dream ends.

The Ghost In The Hall

Nightmare 9/24/2017

My family and I return to a house in Frankton, Indiana in which we used to live. The place seems stale and reeks of ghosts. All of us gathers in my mom and dad's old bedroom. Something is in the hallway. I close the door and lock it. I can see a shadow of something moving around outside the door. Dream ends.

Miscellaneous #2

Dream 8/9/2017

I'm on a football team. The team sits in a classroom. The TV is on. The coach asks me to push play on the remote control. I do. The projector starts a movie on the opposite side of the room. The coach asks, "what are you doing?" I am now confused.

My sister and a friend named Matt are trying to decide between two water slides. My sister is afraid of the big water slide but I convince her to try it. Matt goes before me. As soon as I see him at the end of the slide, I move into position. There is a stoplight to let riders know when it is safe to slide. The green light is lit. I slide. At the middle of the slide, I run into about fifty people who are sitting in place. I ask what they are doing. They are protesting something. Geez, everyone is protesting something today. I tell them that they are nuts and that the slide is going to collapse. I force my way through causes many riders to lose traction and slide the rest of the way. The staff forces the rest of them to come down. At one point, I shout, "you guys owe me three bucks for wasting my ride."

My friend, Kirk, is apart of a Jeopardy tournament being held at my school. He wins. Everyone is leaving the school. Kirk gets angry with my sister. He tells her, "I don't like how you tell people that you've won the tournament before, it was really hard for me." My sister needs a ride home. Something is wrong with her car. Kirk says it is alright, he can give her a lift. My friends Kirk, Tim and my sister and I ride with Kirk through downtown Anderson, Indiana.

At one point, we are out of the car standing on a street corner. On the other side of the street is a large, abandoned building. Kirk mentions how the main door has fallen off. Some of the building as crumbled but much of it is still standing. Many of the windows are broken. All of us try throwing a small basketball into the broken windows from this side of the street. When it comes to be my turn, I look both ways to make sure no cops are coming. When it is clear, I hurl the ball as hard as I can. It doesn't even reach the other side of the road. I feel like "Smalls" from The Sandlot. I say that there is no way to get the ball into the window.

We walk to the other side and check out the building. Kirk gets inside. I look inside the window and see that the lights are on. Then they turn off. I wonder is Kirk is turning the lights on and off. He walks out. While walking down some stairs, I notice an opening at the bottom of the building. I move around the opening to see. One could definitely get into the building through here.

All of us walk down the sidewalk. I see three kids that look like they attend Hogwarts. They all wear black robes. Suddenly, Kirk, Tim and my sister start running. They are racing each other. My sister falls down. I run and stand next to her as we are not in a good part of the town. Dream ends.

The Conference

Dream 6/29/2017

I'm at some sort of conference. The building is bustling with people dressed up in costume. I walk through a gymnasium to a door at the far end. Chevy Chase is standing in the door. Later on, I walk into, what I believe is, a coffee shop. A deep sense of fear washes over me as I notice that everyone in here is dressed as satanists wearing dark hoods and scary masks. I tell the girl who I am with that I am unnerved.

In a large stadium, thousands of young adults, dressed as colorful clowns, sit and listen to a man speak. I am sitting with my friends, Korie and Tim. We are talking a bit too loudly during the mans speaking. He points us out and splits us up. We have to sit in different places now. I exit the building and walk to a second stadium where yet another speaking engagement is being held. I sit on the outside where I can still hear.

A lady psychologist calls me over to a group. I sit in a circle with others my age. The lady asks me what school I went to as a boy and then assumes a local school in which I've never heard. I tell her that I went to Liberty in Anderson, Indiana. I tell her that it was a private school. She asks another question. I start talking to her and the group about my blog called "Sleep Talk" which is a documentation of nightly dreams. I feel that the group is bored with my talking. Dream ends.

Street Vendor

A Dream From The Past

I'm in Anderson, Indiana near my old high school walking toward the Mounds mall area. It is night and I'm not in a safe area so I have a bit of stress on me. In between my school and the mall lies a little alley that connects the two. Walking down the alley I see a woman with a hot dog cart selling hot dogs and polish sausages. Most of the people in the alley, the late night bar crowd, eat from her cart.

I stop at the cart and order two hot dogs with everything. The lady makes me a variation of the LA Street Dog. She first puts mustard on it, covered in grilled onions and green and red bell peppers. She then asks me if a Dr. Pepper is okay for my drink. I approve. She hands me a can of Dr. Pepper.

Later on that night, I see that the hot dog cart is there but the woman is gone. I explore her cart. I find a package of pepper jack cheese laying out. I think it's gone bad. I make myself a hot dog with the grilled onion and peppers. I check out the frig and see an assortment of sodas. I grab a Sprite. Dream ends.

Hoosier Horrors

Nightmare 2/27/2017

I'm investigating dark histories of Indiana with Steven Crowder. We find urban legends attributed to certain towns in the Hoosier state. Then we get on Google Earth and get a close up view of the towns. Each town with a dark urban legend that we view causes our computer screen to immediately go black. We have a feeling that the government is behind this, so we decide to investigate these mysterious legends in person.

One local legend leads us to a small, rural trailer park in which everything has been burned to a charred ruin. The fire had something to do with a satanic ritual gone awry. The legend seems to still be alive and well. The feeling I get from this place is pure fear.

We travel to another town in southern Indiana to investigate a story where a mother sacrificed her two children, boiled their bodies in large barrels of water and then had a cannibal feast. This happened in another trailer park, however this time, it wasn't abandoned due to fire. This park was still in use, in fact, we believe the mother is still here. We place a small camera in a hidden location inside a trailer in which we suspect the mother lives. We watch on a separate screen as an old man and his wife walk around their kitchen and living room. It's rather dull. Nothing interesting happens.

Back at Stevens house, I walk from the back room to the front room. One part of his house is very messy but the front is clean. Steven and another person are sitting watching TV. At one point, a few girls show up to his house and one of the girls gives a tour of Stevens property. We all join the tour. I have a crush on a blonde girl. I repeatedly shoot her glances throughout the tour. Dream ends.

American Life

Dream 2/23/2017

I'm in an arcade in the mall. I step into a photo booth and snap a picture of myself. I reach into the drop box where the picture should appear and find several photos of previous picture takers along with napkins and an envelope. I take the envelope. Inside I find a load of money. I fold the envelope in half and slide it into my pocket with the full intention of taking it to the mall security office so it can be returned to its rightful owners.

I leave the mall.

I'm exploring the barn at my Middletown, Indiana house. I walk over to a shelf and inside a box find stacks of home videos. I am ecstatic because I thought they had been destroyed.

Walking down a street, I come across a dark, Gothic mansion. Locals call it Thorn Mansion. Somehow I find myself inside the large house. I find no one except for a wax statue of a man. The house hold lots of interesting artifacts but nothing to keep me here, so I leave.

Someone plays a video game that I used to know. It looks so familiar. It is called "American Life." I used to play it at my cousin's house in Illinois. The game consists of the player creating towns and watching them grow and interacting with people and houses.

My jeans lay on the floor. Inside one of the pockets I find the envelope full of money. I start looking through the bills and notice that much of the money is foreign. I don't recognize the currency at all.

Some friends and I search for a restaurant to eat. The driver and I agree that we should eat at either Arbys or Jimmy Johns. My friend Adam says that he's craving Taco Bell. Also he is broke so I need to pay for his food. We decide to eat at Taco Bell. Dream ends.

Timber

Dream 2/16/2017

It's Easter holiday. A large group of friends and family gather at my old house in Middletown, Indiana. Much of our stuff is still here.

I walk to the family room, which used to be the garage. I look out the french doors to the large backyard. I see a truck. Whose truck is that? I see two men chopping down a tree. It's one of our favorite trees that holds a tire swing that was hung by my dad. I walk to the front room and ask my sister if she hired lumberjacks to cut down the tree. She didn't. We run to the backyard and call the men inside. We ask them why they're cutting down our tree. They said they were hired to do it. My sister jumps in and says, "no, I didn't hire anyone to cut it down." They suddenly change their story and say the previous owner hired them. I ask them what the previous owners name is. One of the men looks at me and smiles as if to say you caught me, Chief. "You slick piece of shit," I say to him. We tell them to get out of our home.

I'm having a serious craving for something sweet. I grab a bowl of caramel ice cream. When I'm finished, I join the rest of the group in the kitchen but I'm still hungry. I start hunting through the refrigerator and freezer. I find another box of caramel ice cream. I look for my bowl and see it on the table next to my grandpa. It still has remnants of ice cream coating the inside. I reach to grab it when grandpa starts joking and says, "no, it's my bowl. It's my ice cream," he says. I let out a snicker and take the bowl. I enjoy my second round of the frozen dessert. Dream ends.

Swell Timing

A Dream from My Past

I'm walking through a large, empty mall with my mom. We sit down at the food court and talk. We decide to leave the mall. We walk and walk and walk and walk. When we get to the entrance, she remembers that we parked at the other entrance. I decide to wait while she gets the car.

I'm walking up a snowy trail in Middletown, Indiana. There is a house on my left but I don't know who lives there. I keep walking. I think about the movie Schindler's List.

I browse the shelves at a local, used bookstore hoping to find an interesting read. I pull one from the shelf. It's King Kong. I loved the movies but never knew there was a book. I buy it.

I'm in the basement of a youth pastors house. I'd say about forty teenagers are here listening to the pastor speak. Another kid insults me. I decide to leave. As I'm walking up the stairs, the whole group of teenagers erupt into a brawl. Swell timing. Dream ends.
